In the wake of a storm that destroys her city, Grusha finds herself stuck with her employer’s tiny son and nowhere to turn. Fighting her way through the swamps to her sister’s suburban home, she reassures the baby in her arms that safety is imminent and her fiancé Simon will rescue them. But what Grusha does not know is that on the Northshore, in the heat, with all the men missing, everything is old again. And the old ways are unforgiving to strangers.
This riotous, visceral adaptation of Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle is a roaring ride from start to finish.
THE VOODOO CHALK CIRCLE was first produced by The State Theatre Company of Chicago at The Viaduct Theatre in April 2011. The production was directed by Tim Speicher.

REVIEWS
“Marcantel boils down a hugely complex script to a briskly paced and potent one-act…like Mary Zimmerman on the cheap, consistently charming in its ingenuity… it’s a rousing show.” – John Beer, TimeOut Chicago
“New, strikingly original adaptation… lyrical dialogue and sweeping, moody vision… a subtle yet stunning array of puppetry, projection, movement, and music propel the audience through a dreamscape of fear and desire, where old ways and ancient spirits emerge to replace a decimated society.” – Keith Griffin, Chicago Reader
Wonderful opportunity to revisit this story in a new light… [Marcantel’s] most ambitious and successful endeavor to date…. Poetic and resonant… an important piece of theatre this season that should not be overlooked.” – Jason Rost, Chicago Theatre Blog
