Six Los Angeles-based playwrights have been selected to take part in the inaugural cycle of Geffen Playhouse’s The Writers’ Room. The previously announced initiative will offer L.A. writers a forum for engagement and collaboration through a one-year residency.
The first playwrights to take part will be Angelica Chéri (Prophet’s Cycle Trilogy, Gun & Powder), Dipika Guha (Yoga Play, The Art of Gaman), Chelsea Marcantel (Airness, Everything is Wonderful), Brian Otaño (You Across From Me), Liza Powel O’Brien (First Natives, In Frame), and Matt Schatz (The Burdens, Dunkfest ’88). Their residency, led by Geffen Playhouse Manager of New Play Development Rachel Wiegardt-Egel, will formally begin in September.
“We had a remarkable pool of talented, passionate playwrights apply for The Writers’ Room – it was nearly impossible to select only six,” said Artistic Director Matt Shakman. “Los Angeles is an exciting home for both established and emerging writers, and we can’t wait to get started down the creative path with this team.”
